Do you have good content but are struggling to increase your website traffic and social followers? Are you new to blogging and would love to have some tips on growing your website traffic? Are you constantly struggling to come up with fresh, trending articles for your blog?
Recently, I had the honour of meeting Vincent Golangco, founder of the popular social site, WhenInManila.com, in a migme event. In the event, Vincent Golangco shared about his start-up journey of how he had successfully grown his blog with only 5 readers on his first day to a popular social site garnering over more than 10 million daily impressions today. In this article, I will be sharing my personal insights and the blogging tips shared by Vincent Golangco.
Previously, I had also attended a migme event with the Indonesian Idols – An Interview with Lucky Octavian & Meeting the Indonesian Idols.
1. Stand Out with Your Brand & Write Strategically
Building a blog is akin to building a brand name for yourself. When people hear of your name or blog name, they can immediately attribute it to a brand. Just think of the big brand names like Nike, Starbucks, MacDonald and Coco Cola.
Besides having good content and regularly updating your blog to engage readers, you also need to write strategically with a PURPOSE to keep them coming back for more. So aim to have something meaningful to say that will add value to pique the interest of your readers.
Furthermore, you should also post frequently to increase the number of chances for search engines to notice your blog, which is like throwing more threads in the huge ocean called “Google” for your articles to be ranked higher.
You can also use Buzzsumo to see what others have written regarding a particular topic and spin a better angle out of it. In terms of writing style, some are better with taking bright, beautiful photographs with a short caption (a picture speaks a thousand words) while others like to show shocking statistics, smart infographics, make a creative video or a “How-to-screencast”. These are the kind of creative posts that people would want to read and share with their friends.
2. Write “Positive” articles & Evoke Positive emotions
The “best” emotions to evoke from your readers are awe, laughter or amusement and these are the articles that will most likely be shared and go viral. If you really want to rant or write “negative” articles, be careful with the backlash your may receive if you are not adept at handling readers’ reaction and feedback to your “negative” article. I am always a firm believer in writing ethically and responsibly.
3. Comment Away!
A simple and yet effective way to increase your blog traffic is to actively respond to comments on your blog to interact with readers and show that you appreciate their opinions and draw them into a two-way conversation. Moreover, having more comments in an article will also attract readers to check them out.
Case in point: I have readers emailing me to enquire about the Afit exercise chair which I saw on a Taiwanese TV programme and had it shipped from Taiwan last year as they assume that I am a local agent for the chair. Despite my blog post indicating that I was only a customer like them, I still go out of my way to answer their enquiries promptly and provide them with useful information.
Another way to harness the power of comments is to leave meaningful comments on other blogs to drive new traffic to yours. Just make sure that you are able to leave your blog’s URL in your comment to create a trackback to your own blog. Many readers will actually read comments left on a blog post out of curiosity or interest and if your comment is witty enough, they are more likely to click on the link to visit your website.
4. Remember Your Best Friend – Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
When you write your blog posts, remember to optimize your posts for search engines to find them easily. Look for relevant keywords and links pertaining to your topic but do not overload your post with too many keywords, completely irrelevant keywords or drop links everywhere as spamming can produce the negative result of your blog being removed from Google’s search results entirely. Do you know that even your photographs can be optimised for search engine if you name it appropriately with keywords in mind? People may just land on your page when they are searching for a particular image on the internet.
5. Now It’s about who knows you
We used to hear the saying “It’s not what you know but who you know” and now you will hear “It’s not who you know but who knows you” that matter. Before you publish your article, if your know an influencer or someone with many social followers, you may want to give the person a heads up to help do social shares for your article. Just remember to be polite and return the favour when you have the opportunity to as no one likes to be taken for a ride! 🙂
6. Post content on influential/viral platforms such as WhenInManila.com, Migme & Facebook Groups
Go where your followers or advertisers are most likely to be found. Joining a social community has its benefits such as getting more coverage, maximise SEO benefit, create quality backlinks to your blog and getting event invitations and products sponsorship for active contributors.
This is where you can share ideas and ask questions with other like-minded individuals. You can also add a link to your blog in your signature line or profile, so that each time you post or participate in another social network, you are indirectly promoting your blog. This will increase the likelihood of people clicking on that link to find out more about you.
Migme is a social entertainment company with a highly engaging and profitable microblogging platform with over 9 million monthly active users in the world. With migme, you can amplify your content to reach a wider audience globally and enhance your website traffic and social media presence. Some popular bloggers in the migme community are Alvinology, WorkingWithGrace and LittleMissHoney, whom I had the pleasure of knowing ever since I joined migme.
