Imagine a life without banking. You would not be able to send money to the USA in a blink of an eye, with a click of the mouse. Inspired by true stories, SPARKS is a 6-part mini-series by DBS which follows a group of young bankers as they navigate through work and their personal lives.
Through this mini-series, DBS tries to change the perception that banking is not merely about transactions, it about real life people and situations and going the extra mile for customers.
Frankly, I didn’t know what to expect before watching the mini-series but was greatly inspired by the true stories of how the bank turn the lives of their clients around and create lasting impact in the lives of real people and real businesses.
The mini-series stars veteran Singapore actor Adrian Pang and Hong Kong actor Richard Ng and his son Carl Ng.
Episode 1: Once upon a time
In this pilot episode of the DBS SPARKS mini-series, Claire Lee, a relationship manager, was introduced to a seemingly arrogant new colleague, Jasper Wu, who was the top of his class in Oxford. They started off on a wrong footing when they met, but will sparks fly between the two later?
Much to her reluctance, Claire was tasked to show Jasper around, and then to visit a potential client together. The client, Lindsay, has been having problems in getting a loan as no bank would want to finance her business.
Live More Bank Less
“Bank less, not bank more?” ask Jasper. But his boss answered him, “It’s not just about money, it’s when we can help our clients get more out of life. It’s about making banking simple, smart and effortless. After all, people bank to live, not live to bank.”
Episode 2: Saving Sunlight
Lindsay is in a predicament. Just what is so crazy about Lindsay’s business that no bank would want to finance her?
Lindsay’s business model was not only unconventional, it was too risky to warrant the bank loan. However, Claire was moved by Lindsay’s passion and together with Jasper, they decided to do everything they can to help Lindsay realize her dreams and evaluate Lindsay’s plan with the rest of the team.
Episode 3: Fighting Giants
The loan was finally approved. But an unexpected development tests the young bankers, and they devised a plan to help Lindsay. Will they win over the community and stop Lindsay’s father from selling the land over to the real estate developer?
Sometimes even business has to take a back seat. Seeing how Lindsay and her father repair their relationship is really heartwarming and touching in this episode.
Episode 4 – Never too late
This episode was inspired by a real situation where DBS Bank stopped a client from making an investment in an established and well-known peer-to-peer lending company. The company was subsequently exposed by the authorities for running an elaborate Ponzi scheme that had swindled almost a million investors.
Episode 5: In pursuit of the cure
This episode was inspired by a real case where a lady turned to the bank for help to invest in an experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, in the hope to find a cure for her husband, who was a retired medical professor.
Jasper is also resigning due to a wrong judgement he made in the previous episode. Will the blossoming love between Jasper and Claire be tested?
Episode 6: New Beginnings
This episode is inspired by Zaya Learning Labs – a social enterprise supported by the DBS Foundation, which developed tech based learning platforms for schools in the low-income areas.
Together, the young bankers challenged traditions and worked to change the future of an entire rural village. Will they succeed?
After binge watching the entire mini-series, I had to say I really like the script! It was so well thought out and gave me a lot of insight into the world of banking which I had totally no clue of.
