I first heard of Quincy Hotel from a friend who frequently indulged in staycations almost every weekend and learn about the Qool Weekend Staycation through Seth Lui’s blog. Quincy Hotel has won the accolade of being Singapore’s best luxury boutique hotel by the World Luxury Hotel Awards in 2012 as well as Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award from 2011-2014. Located in a quiet neighbourhood at Mount Elizabeth, it is a 10-15 minutes walk to Orchard road. Last weekend, we drove to Quincy Hotel for a staycation to celebrate my husband’s birthday as a yearly tradition.
We found out that Quincy Hotel was sharing the same car park with The Elizabeth Hotel next door, however there was no signage of Quincy Hotel outside or inside the car park at all and we had to call Quincy Hotel to confirm that we are in the right car park (just so we can get complimentary parking). Both hotels are under the management of Far East Hospitality.
My first thought as I entered the lobby was that it is pretty small but the design is modern and contemporary. Quincy Hotel is a boutique hotel after all and you can’t compare it to the scale of a luxury hotel. We were served by a friendly staff, Alvin, who informed us that we could check out at 3 pm the next day and the complimentary red wine was already in our room. Awesome! 🙂
Our Qool Weekend package (I paid $379.23 nett for our stay) includes:
- One night stay at The Quincy Hotel’s Studio Room
- Buffet breakfast for 2
- All-day light refreshments by Dean & DeLuca and Modesto’s (Modesto’s restaurant is located at The Elizabeth Hotel next door.)
- Evening cocktails
- One bottle of red wine
- Complimentary in-room mini-bar (Expect carbonated drinks, tea, mineral water, potato chips and cookies.)
- Free entry to The Butter Factory for 1+1 (You can bring one other friend into the club.)
- Late check-out till 3pm (subject to availability)
- Local calls
- Unlimited Wi-Fi access
- Art Jam session (Sat) and Cup Cake baking session (Sun)
Our room was also not huge but it was comfortable enough and was well equipped with the necessary creature comforts with even a cleverly hidden ironing board! As the curtain was rather translucent, we spent some time fiddling with it until we called the front desk and was told that the switch for the automatic curtain was located by the bedside. We felt a little silly not to realise it. 🙂
The hotel has also generously provided toiletries from Molton Brown – an upmarket bath, body and beauty connoisseur from London. Sadly, I only remember to bring home the gingerlily shower gel as I was too busy with the various activities planned for us… 🙁
As our Art Jam session was at 3 pm, we wasted no time to have a quick tea break at the lobby restaurant but were not very impressed with the selection of cakes and spread (probably because it’s only 30 minutes left to the closing of the buffet and they were preparing to clear the place).
The Qool Weekend Staycation was really popular with couples and they was only one family with a young child there. We actually wanted to go for the Cup Cake baking session on Sunday afternoon but was informed that it would cost an additional $40 nett and decided to give it a miss.
We went out for dinner as I had made a reservation at Saveur Art in Orchard Ion. Just walk down the street and enter the lobby of York Hotel (look out for the two stone lion statues) and you’ll end up at the back of Far East Plaza outside York Hotel.
When we return to Quincy Hotel at 8 pm, we continue feasting as they were serving light entrees and canapes in the lobby restaurant. As we were savouring the soft serve ice cream, fresh fruits and fried chicken wings, Alvin suddenly surprised us with a Tiramisu cake for my husband and even took a Polaroid photo for us to capture the moment.
At 9 pm, we watched an outdoor movie screening (22 Jump Street) by the poolside and the Quincy team has thoughtfully placed potato chips and beverages at the side table for our enjoyment. The next morning, after a hearty and satisfying buffet breakfast, we went for a complimentary City Tour with the FunVee Open Top bus. The driver came and took us to the Singapore Flyer where we waited to board the bus.
One thing to note is that the complimentary City Tour does not include a return trip back to Quincy Hotel so we had to change our initial plan to go to the Marina Bay area and choose the Orchard road route instead as we had not check out yet. It was fun to be a tourist in your own country once in a while and drive through Esplanade, Singapore River, Clarke Quay, Chinatown and Botanic Gardens, while sitting on top of the Open Top Bus.
We felt that Quincy Hotel really deserves its title as one of Singapore’s best boutique hotel as the Quincy team was sincere, hospitable and spared no effort to make our stay a delightful one. We thoroughly enjoyed the fun-filled activities, whole-day refreshments and buffet spread planned for us.
After we left Quincy Hotel, my husband received a call from his brother informing him that he had suffered from a blackout and vomited while working out in the gym and was on his way to KTPH A&E. Scans and tests revealed that my brother in-law has suffered a minor stroke from a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. My brother-in-law has always been the super fit athlete type and we were shocked when the doctors said that he could have “over-exercised”. The doctors informed that 1/3 of patients would not have survived this and my brother-in-law was very fortunate to be alive. As there are only 3 neurosurgeons in Singapore that could perform this specialised surgery, he was immediately transferred to NUH and operated on straightaway.
Endovascular coiling is a minimally invasive technique, which means that an incision in the skull is not required to treat the ruptured vessel. A catheter is passed through the groin up into the ruptured vessel and platinum coils are then released. The coil seals off the opening of the aneurysm and are left in place permanently in the aneurysm.
The singular most important thing in life is good health and even a good thing (in this case was exercise) when taken to the extreme can be harmful. The second most important thing in life is a good medical insurance policy as money should be the last thing to worry about when you are unwell. Even as I am writing this post right now, my brother-in-law is still recuperating in the hospital and possibly would need to tone down his exercise and be on blood thinners. We thank God everyday that he is safe and sound.
I love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave your comments below. 🙂
