When I first heard of the love story between the owner Ken Chia (former chef at The Ritz Carlton, The Fullerton and Crowne Plaza Hotel) and his wife, I was moved by their sweet romance of how he used to cook lamb shank every day to woo his wife back in the days when he was just a trainee chef and she was a waitress working in the same restaurant.
After a while, his wife became suspicious as everyone else in the restaurant only get to eat fried rice or fried noodles but she get to eat this specialty lamb shank! This was how Rice & Fries’ lamb shank became their most popular signature dish as Chef Ken has perfected the dish while cooking it for his wife every day!
As Chef Ken believes in serving good food prepared with love, he decided not to impose any service charge in Rice & Fries. All prices indicated are NETT and they are now delivering their food through express food delivery service – Deliveroo.
Cool Down with Refreshing Somersby Ciders
The weather in Singapore has been sweltering hot these days, but fret not as Rice & Fries will be introducing some refreshing Somersby ciders by the end of this month to pair with their popular dishes. We tried both the pear and apple Somersby ciders at Rice & Fries, which tasted crisp and natural.
Lamb Shank | $28.80
The specialty lamb shank was served with fettuccine and french beans drenched in a flavourful gravy and each batch requires 72 hours of careful preparation to cook the meat sous-vide style to lock in the juicy flavour and then searing it.
The lamb shank was fork-tender and the entire piece of meat just fell off the bone easily. For someone who never likes to eat lamb, I relished this dish very much!
Mushroom Cappuccino and Tomato Soup | $6.80 each
The flavours in both the mushroom cappuccino and tomato soup are a little on the intense side.
Chilli Soft Shell Crab | $15.80
Chilli crabs have always been a favourite local delight and this dish is presented with a twist at Rice & Fries – the deep-fried crisp soft-shelled crab is served with sweet chilli sauce and tasty mantou.
Originally an SG50 dish, the regulars love it so much that they have introduced it as a permanent fixture in the menu.
Corn tortillas chips
Spam Fries (with salted egg sauce) | $9.80
Truffle Fries | $9.80
The corn tortilla chips, spam fries and truffle fries make a great side dish and accompaniment to the main dishes. We enjoyed the crispy spam fries the most which tasted best when it is piping hot. I prefer not to pour the salted egg sauce in as this will make the fries very soggy.
Poached Salmon | $18.80
This is another crowd pleaser among the diners as the poached salmon was nicely seasoned with a perfectly pink centre.
Salted Egg Prawn Pasta | $19.80
Diners have a choice of either having the Salted Egg Pasta with deep-fried prawns or soft-shelled crab. As we already had the soft-shelled crab earlier, we tried the version with deep-fried prawns.
Salted egg yolk lovers will love the smooth and intense flavour of the rich sauce. I was told that the entire prawn can be eaten whole but I always felt squeamish eating the head and tail of the prawns, so I left them out.
Pork Chop (Pork Collar) | $16.80
I find the meat to be pretty tough as I was having trouble cutting it with my knife, otherwise this is a good dish.
Crab Risotto | $21.80
Carbonara | $16.80
Here are some of the desserts we tried at Rice & Fries:
Rainbow Cheesecake | $7.80
Each colour in the beautiful rainbow cheesecake represent a unique flavour and they are strawberry, orange, pandan, yam, lemon and vanilla.
Lemon Tart | $6.80
Matcha Lava Cake | $9.80
Waffle with Double scoops of Ice-cream | $10
Dark Chocolate Lava Cake | $9.80
I need to give special mention to the decadent Dark Chocolate Lava Cake as it has been revised for over 30 times by the dedicated Chef Ken to achieve its current top-notch state. Talk about achievement unlocked!
This favourite dessert is paired with sweet strawberry sauce and a refreshing dollop of vanilla ice cream.
I like the friendly vibes and wholesome food at Rice & Fries so much that I went back the following Tuesday on my own and had the Lamb Shank again! They have a buy 1-get-1 free soup promotion on Tuesdays as well as different promotions on other days of the week.
